Cape Canaveral

Space rockets and fun memories

MSC Cruises shore excursions can be a clever option to see Cape Canaveral and the Space Coast. The home of NASA’s phenomenal Kennedy Space Center occupies a flat, marshy island bulging into the Atlantic just fifteen miles east of Cape Canaveral.

Many of the visitors who flock here are surprised to find that the land from which rockets are launched is also a sizeable wildlife refuge framed by several miles of rough coastline. Justifiably the biggest draw in the region, it has been the nucleus of the US space programme since 1958: it’s here on Merritt Island and the adjacent Cape Canaveral Air Force Station that NASA’s space vehicles are developed, tested and blasted into orbit. Set up a bit like an Orlando theme park, the vast Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will enthral anyone with the slightest interest in space exploration, with everything from enormous rockets and the history of the moon landings, to IMAX movies and a space shuttle launch simulation on offer.

Regular admission covers the bus tour and all the attractions in the complex, plus the Rocket Garden (where all NASA’s major rockets are on show), the Astronaut Encounter, a chance to meet and question a real-life astronaut, and the US Astronaut Hall of Fame across the Indian River in Titusville. If you travel in Florida with an MSC cruise ship, you have to visit Disney World during your MSC Caribbean cruise: it goes way beyond Walt Disney’s original “theme park” delivering escapism at its most technologically advanced and psychologically brilliant in a multitude of ingenious guises across an area twice the size of Manhattan.

In a crime-free environment where wholesome all-American values hold sway and the concept of good clean fun finds its ultimate expression, Disney World often makes the real world – and all its problems – seem like a distant memory.

  • HIGHLIGHTS OF PORT CANAVERAL

    CITY TOUR

    CPV05

A varied and entertaining tour awaits you that promises to deliver the very best of the area surrounding the old fishing village of Port Canaveral, beginning with a trip to the US Air Force Space & Missile Museum for a look at exhibits illustrating various space missions launched from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. You’ll then move on to Canaveral Locks, which were built in 1965 to facilitate a safely navigable route between the Banana River and the Atlantic Ocean. Apart from reducing the velocity of tidal currents in Canaveral Harbour, protecting the Banana River from hurricane tides and blocking the incursion of salt water, the lock is a magnet for large numbers of fish and birdlife. A look at the concomitant fishing industry then follows with a visit to a working dock where copious quantities of seafood are landed every year. You’ll also get to see the docks where one of Florida’s most popular culinary delicacies, rock shrimp, comes ashore and learn a little about the tasty treat, its habitat and the village of Cape Canaveral itself. To round off your enjoyable tour, you’ll also be able to enjoy the sweet flavour of freshly caught rock shrimp. Next, visit the new Exploration Tower, whose seven storeys of exhibits honour both the past and present of the Space Coast. You’ll end your experience in Port Canaveral with interactive exhibits and spectacular views of the port that only the Exploration Tower can offer. Get your cameras out and capture the view before heading back to your ship.

    • WILDLIFE PONTOON LAGOON CRUISE

      SCENIC ROUTE

      CPV03

The sliver of land that separates Florida’s Banana River from the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean is home to the small town of Cocoa Beach, just south of Cape Canaveral, and the breathtaking beauty of its Thousand Islands delta. Actually comprising about 100 islands proper, the area was formed when a storm-driven flood broke through the barrier island, although the date of the occurrence remains unknown. Covering a huge area of approx. 865 acres, the varied landscape is made up of salt marshes, mangroves and elevated spoil sites featuring upland vegetation, shell middens and stands of trees known as “hammocks”. Unsurprisingly, this rich habitat is teeming with wildlife, which this scenic and leisurely boat tour will give you a chance to experience live and direct. As you make your way around the narrow canals separating the islands, you’ll be able to look out for grazing manatees and pods of playful dolphins in the water, while up above you can delight in the sight of various coastal birds. The fully narrated tour will acquaint you with the landscape and wildlife, leaving you with plenty of fabulous memories to enjoy when you’re back on the ship. Please note: This fully guided and narrated tour requires no walking. The pontoon boat is fitted with a surround-sound speaker system. Wildlife sightings, though common in the area, cannot be guaranteed.

    • KAYAKING AT MANATEE COVE

      SEA & SUN

      CPV04

The riverine landscape close to Cape Canaveral is not only extremely beautiful, but also provides the perfect conditions for water sports such as kayaking. Taking you to Manatee Cove on the Indian River Lagoon, this tour will see you board a kayak to explore areas of incredible wildlife diversity plus some truly amazing scenery. As you paddle through the eerie quiet of the mangrove backwaters, you may well find an osprey – plus prey – flying overhead, and when you cross the grass flats, you may find yourself in the company of dolphins, the lagoon’s top predator. But as the mangroves and sea-grass beds actually provide a habitat for some 4,000 species of flora and fauna, you’re equally likely to encounter manatees, stingrays, sea turtles, seahorses, scores of different fish and any number of birds on your leisurely tour. Leaving the magic of this unspoiled lagoon behind, you’ll then make your way back to the ship, richer in experience and with memories to share. Please note: Wildlife sightings, though common in the area, cannot be guaranteed. This tour is not suitable for infants or for guests with mobility problems.

      • REAL FLORIDA AIRBOAT ADVENTURE

        SOMETHING SPECIAL

        CPV02

Follow in the footsteps of C.S.I. Miami’s intrepid Lt. Horatio Caine and board an authentic Floridian airboat, complete with an air propeller at the stern, to discover the amazing wetlands! After you’ve boarded the airboat, your US-Coast-Guard-accredited skipper will first take you down the St. Johns River, which is not only the longest in Florida, but also the only river in the USA to flow north! Also dubbed “The Lazy River” due to its sedate flow rate, the St. Johns, the many lakes it forms and adjacent mangrove areas are home to a rich variety of wildlife. As you skim across the water at speeds of up to 30 mph, you’ll need to hold on to your headset to ensure you don’t miss a thing on this fully narrated tour. Expect to pass within spitting distance of alligators, snakes and turtles in the water, while osprey, eagles, hawks, cranes, egrets and herons soar overhead. But the vegetation found in this incredible swamp area is equally beautiful, with water lilies and the purple-flowering pickerel weed being just two examples. Your exhilarating ride finally draws to a close with your return to the ship. Please note: wildlife sightings, though common in the area, cannot be guaranteed. To ensure maximum audio enjoyment, the headsets come with a noise-cancelling feature.

        The land of opportunity
        The land of opportunity

The undeniable protagonists of the Caribbean Islands are their crystal-clear waters.

Undertaking a voyage to the USA, which includes these magnificent, uncontaminated locations, is a unique experience. Miami, the Bahamas, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are the stops of this excellent MSC cruise. You embark in Miami, Florida. A large, multicultural metropolis that has seen a lot of Latin influence over the centuries, its most photographed and visited location is South Beach. Fashionable locales, elegant boutiques, characteristic cafés and historical buildings: here, the past, the present and the future blend in an unmistakable mix of rhythms and frenzy. In the Caribbean Sea, Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the US Virgin Islands, is an enchanting location of luxuriously green hills, small pure-white dwellings, a sea rich in colourful fish and breath-taking sunsets, similar to the Bahamas, an island chain consisting of about 700 islands of pink sand surrounded by transparent waters north of Cuba.

San Juan, the populous capital of Puerto Rico, on the other hand, will enchant you with its skyscrapers and its old city encircled by magnificent buildings constructed during the colonial period.
