Roseau

Old French style

On Morne Bruce, a one-of-a-kind cannon continues to symbolically protect the people of Roseau, the capital of the Dominica located on the Caribbean Sea shore.

From this privileged observation point, the gaze travels from Woodbridge Bay, the port in which MSC cruise ships contribute to creating a pleasant holiday panorama, to the botanical gardens unfolding at the foot of the mountain itself.

Roseau, the most important and oldest settlement of the island, was a French outpost founded in the 16th century on the banks of the Roseau River. It is rich in atmosphere and French colonial style, and its original urban layout can still be seen in the Old Market area. Possible excursions into the surrounding hills are infinite; just choose the one that intrigues you the most. The greatest of them all is a six-hour or so ascent in hot and humid weather to the boiling lake.

But there are also less demanding hikes, such as an excursion to the crater at the top of Morne aux Diables; as well easy treks, such as a walk to a refuge in Jaco Flats built by runaway slaves followed by a bath in one of the numerous coves near Paradise Bar, where the walk begins and ends. Another spectacle is the twin Trafalgar Falls located just 20 minutes away from Roseau. Here, a brief walk will take you from the visitor centre to an observation platform.

The more intrepid visitor can take a refreshing bath in the lake at the base of the smallest of the waterfalls; the less adventurous can relax in the hot pools just short of reaching the foot of the two falls. Another excursion not to miss out on is the one that will take you to Emerald Pool. A cave in the centre of the island framed by a fairy-tale scene that has been featured in many films and served as the setting for weddings.

  • CHAMPAGNE REEF SNORKEL BY BOAT

    ACTIVE & ADVENTURE

    RSU04

This water-based tour begins with a 5-minute walk from the ship to board a catamaran, whose captain will then welcome you and brief you on safety matters. After taking receipt of your snorkelling gear and signing the necessary waiver forms, the boat will set sail on a 15-minute cruise to the south of the island, passing by lush green mountains and small fishing villages on the way. The area is also home to numerous different marine birds, some of which you may well spot flying by. On arrival at the northern end of the Soufriere Scott’s Head Marine Reserve, the boat will moor. You can then seek out the bubbly destination of this tour: the famous Champagne Reef, so named after the effervescent effect created in the water by gas escaping from the volcanic rock below. The reef is classed as one of the world’s foremost snorkelling and scuba diving sites, with an unprecedented array of marine wildlife to observe in the water. After some information on snorkelling, each guide will then accompany his or her group into the water, starting gently on a sandbank and working gradually towards the reef itself, while pointing out and naming the many different features of this underwater world. During your cruise back to the ship, you will be served with refreshments to round off your “champagne” experience.

  • TRAFALGAR FALLS & CHAMPAGNE REEF SNORKEL

    NATURAL WONDERS

    RSU16

The fact that the island of Dominica was founded due to volcanic activity can still be felt today, both on dry land and out at sea, although no danger of eruption remains. A coach ride from the pier will first take you through the lush greenery of the Roseau Valley en route to the Trafalgar Waterfalls and the nearby sulphur springs. Have a good look at these marvels of nature, amid some of the most picturesque rainforest stands in the whole of the Caribbean – photo moments waiting to happen, so do remember your camera. Your second brush with volcanic activity then follows underwater at the so-called Champagne Reef. Once you’ve geared up and listened to an orientation briefing, you’ll snorkel through the near-shore water, surrounded by gently effervescing water, fish, sponges and coral. The curious bubbling effect is caused by a volcanic vent in the sea floor. Once back on terra firma, you’ll re-board the coach and make the journey back to Roseau and your ship. Please note: guests are recommended to wear swimwear under light, comfortable clothing, high-factor sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes as well as to bring a towel.

  • WHALE & DOLPHIN ADVENTURE

    NATURAL WONDERS

    RSU10

Among the many species of underwater wildlife inhabiting the coastal waters of Dominica, whales and dolphins are two of the most intelligent and beguiling. A spacious motorised catamaran will take you on a 3-hour cruise along the island’s west coast, around 3 miles offshore, during which time you can enjoy the breeze and, if luck is on your side, spot some whales and dolphins. During the cruise, your captain and the crew will tell you all you need to know about the behaviour of these lovable aquatic mammals and what to look out for. Once the boat has dropped anchor, the crew will lower hydrophones into the water to listen for the rhythmic clicking typical of sperm whales, the pinging of pilot whales, the whistling of dolphins or the singing of humpback whales. An educational commentary will be delivered during this time. Your whale and dolphin adventure comes to a close with your return to the port and your ship. Please note: no guarantees can be given that any whales or dolphins will be seen. The minimum distance for approaching these animals is 55 yards. As the tour takes you to a calving area and ensuring the welfare of these animals is extremely important, no in-water activity will be permitted on the tour.

Dominica

The land of black beaches
The land of black beaches

When your cruise lands you in Dominica, you are half way across the large parenthesis of islands, islets, reefs, atolls and cays that separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean Sea.

Here, however, the beaches are black, not white. Some Carib communities, the ancient inhabitants of these islands who settled here long before Columbus’ days, still live on the eastern coast. During your vacation in Dominica, you can learn more about this ancient and proud ethnic group with a visit to the Kalinago Cultural Center: these were the last natives to lose their land to the colonizers from the old continent. Here, nature reaches the heights of tropical luxuriance: it was not by chance that Dominica was chosen as the location for filming a large part of Disney’s film trilogy on the Pirates of the Caribbean.

The magma concealed within its bowels offers rare and beautiful spectacles, as you can see with an excursion to the Boiling Lake, the second largest steam lake in the world, concealed amidst the vegetation of the hinterland, where welcoming thermal springs create warm lakes and pools in which to relax (or you can choose to spend a few hours in the nearby spa). They say there are 365 waterways, one for every day of the year, with incredible waterfalls opening their way in the heart of the jungle.
