Philipsburg

17th century atmospheres

During your cruise in the Caribbean Sea, after disembarking from your cruise ship in the Dutch port of Philipsburg and visiting the Court House, the heart of the city (a white and blue building dating to 1793 that now serves as the Post Office), don’t miss out on an excursion to the French side of the island.

Marigot, the capital of Saint Martin located on the island’s western coast, is protected by the great lagoon of Simpson Bay. It has retained the atmosphere of late 17th century, when it was founded. It is worth your while to visit its historical centre, which is crowded with wooden houses dotted with delightful shops.

Next, treat yourself to an excursion to Fort St. Louis, built on a hill on the orders of Louis XVI. From here, you can enjoy a stupendous view of Marigot Bay and its beautiful yacht club with the majestic docked luxury yachts.

However, a better view can be enjoyed with a trip to Pic du Paradis, where you will be able to see as far as Anguilla, Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Barth. Since here the sea is the sovereign, don’t miss out on St. Maarten’s beaches, starting with Great Bay Beach, a crescent of sand one kilometre and a half long located in front of Philipsburg. Going beyond the heritage that is Fort Amsterdam (a Dutch fortress constructed in 1620 housing a beautiful exhibit of historical finds) will take you to the intimate Little Bay Beach. From here, you can reach the base of Cay Bay, flanked by a beautiful sea bottom that’s great for snorkelling.

From the capital, surfers and golfers head west. The latter, into the waters of Mullet Bay; and the former onto the golf course behind it. A short distance further, you will find Cupecoy, excavated from the base of a cliff to form small beaches. Even further, on the western tip of the island, you will enter Terre Basse, the French territory. St. Marteen’s largest beach, Baie Longue, is located just a short distance away

    • EXPLORING PHILIPSBURG BY BICYCLE

      ACTIVE & ADVENTURE

      SMT51

After meeting your guide and being shown how to use your trek bike, this pleasant cycling tour around Philipsburg, the capital of Dutch Sint Maarten, begins at Pointe Blanche – a vantage point providing gorgeous views of the surrounding area – and then takes you down to the seafront Boardwalk and into the city. The historical Pasanggrahan Royal Guesthouse, the oldest inn in Sint Maarten, is your first stop on the route. This wonderful old beachfront guesthouse started life as a chicken farm, then progressed to governor’s residence and later even accommodated the Dutch royal family on visits to Sint Maarten. Next up is Captain Hodge Wharf, which forms the centre of this bustling and colourful town and was the original fishing and shipping venue in the early 1900s. After a short walk to see the late 18th-century Philipsburg Courthouse, you will get back on your bike and continue down the Boardwalk, then turn into Back Street and pass the oldest and most picturesque of Philipsburg’s traditional cottages. A climb up Little Bay Hill to the lookout point then follows, where you will be rewarded with incredible views of the town. A second short climb will then take you the early 17th-century Fort Amsterdam for a glimpse of Sint Maarten’s rich history and wonderful views of Philipsburg and the cruise ship terminal. Please note: please wear closed walking shoes and take sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen. Guests must be at least 12 years of age and 153 cm/5 ft. in height to take part.

      • BUTTERFLY FARM & ISLAND TOUR

        CITY TOUR

        SMT67

Small though it is, the island of Saint Martin is shared by two nations – France and the Netherlands – and boasts a slew of beautiful landscapes, stunning beaches, appealing resorts and, on the northern French side, the wonderful Butterfly Farm. With Philipsburg as your starting point, the route will take you through glorious scenery to reach the farm, which is beautifully located in between the Étang des Poissons (Fish Pond) and the Salines d’Orient. Designed and built by two marvellously eccentric Englishmen, the Butterfly Farm opened its doors in 1994 and has since gone from strength to strength. During your visit, friendly guides will lead you through the green enclosures to show you every stage of the butterfly lifecycle. There are hundreds of exotic species in every colour of the rainbow to admire and you can even learn how to handle these delicate creatures and their often funny-looking caterpillars. Leaving the Butterfly Farm behind, the tour then continues on to the capital of French Saint-Martin, Marigot. Time will be yours to do some shopping, browse through the open-air market or have a rest at one of the many sidewalk cafés. On the way back, you’ll have a chance to take some photos at Harold Jack’s lookout point before the coach returns you to the port and your ship.

      • SINT MAARTEN SIGHTSEEING & BEACH

        CITY TOUR

        SMT46

Combining sightseeing and some time at the beach, this coach tour will take you from Philipsburg, the modern-day capital of the Dutch Sint Maarten, over to the French side of the island of Saint Martin. En route, you will pass the Great Salt Pond – an enclosed body of saltwater separated from the sea by a narrow stretch of land – on the banks of which Philipsburg is situated. In days gone by, the pond certainly made the island “worth its salt” and served to attract the French. On the way to the French side, you will also pass a monument that commemorates the modern border between the French and Dutch sides of the island, which was finally and lastingly established in 1816 after much strife. You will also pass through Marigot, the bustling small capital of French Saint Martin, before arriving at one of the island’s best beaches for approximately 1.5 hours of pure relaxation time. Your tour ends with a scenic drive back to the port and your ship. Please note: you are recommended to wear a swimsuit under your clothes and bring a towel, sunscreen and sunglasses. The tour itinerary may be reversed to suit local conditions. A beach chair will be provided free of charge at the beach.

        NATURAL WONDERS

        SMT47

The coastal waters and coral reefs around the Caribbean island of Saint Martin support a hub of spectacular marine wildlife, which this tour in an underwater observatory gives you a chance to experience – but without even having to get your feet wet. After leaving the port, the tour begins with a scenic drive through the hilly interior of the island to reach the seaside resort of Grand Case in the French half. You will then board a semi-submarine, a clever vessel with a submerged passenger cabin and an unsubmerged deck. Your guide will provide interesting facts during your trip to Rocher de Creole, after which a diver will interact with shoals of brilliantly coloured fish and lead them close to the windows for your viewing pleasure. Common species include sea turtles, eels, barracudas and stingrays. Bring your camera to take photos of this unusual show. A leisurely cruise back to shore completes the sea leg of your excursion, with time to relax on the upper deck and enjoy views of the islands of Anguilla (British) as well as Pinel, Tintamarre and Saint Barthélemy (French) in the distance.

        SCENIC ROUTE

        SMT42

The tiny Caribbean island of Saint Martin is not only known for its great natural beauty, incredible beaches and a large variety of wildlife, it is also home to two nations: the French Saint Martin in the north and the Dutch Sint Maarten in the south. This all-round orientation tour will let you discover how French and Dutch influences have shaped the island, which has become an extremely popular holiday destination. To begin with, you will travel through the Dutch side and the capital of Philipsburg, which was founded by John Philips, a Scottish captain in the Dutch Navy, in 1763. You will then continue on up through the hilly interior of the island to Marigot, the capital of French Saint Martin. You will have some time to explore Marigot’s picturesque streets as well as enjoy the quaint houses and outdoor cafés on your own. Your return journey will take you past the seaside town of Grand Case, known as the Caribbean’s “gourmet capital” due to its many fine restaurants. A short stop will be made at Cole Bay Lookout for photos at the panoramic view of Simpson Bay. On return to Philipsburg the bus will drop you downtown and you will be given a water taxi bracelet to return to the pier at your leisure. Please note: shops are closed in Marigot on Sundays and public holidays. The order of the tour may be reversed/changed depending upon tour time and traffic conditions. An approx. 1.5-hour stop will be made at Orient Beach in the French Saint Martin, time enough to enjoy the surroundings while sipping a welcoming drink in your complimentary beach chair. On your return journey, you will then be dropped off just outside the downtown area of Philipsburg for you to browse through the shops and do some shopping. The itinerary is designed to combine action, adventure and sightseeing, but the pace you set is all yours. Rush to finish or take your time, just know that final scores – and with that the overall winners – will be determined on points earned both for the time taken to run the course and the challenges you successfully complete. The light-hearted nature of the race is also reflected in the kind of tasks involved: one moment you might be building sandcastles while the next minute you’ll be identifying ice cream flavours or finding a busy street corner to yell “I LOVE SINT MAARTEN” at the top of your lungs. Unless you actually join the fun, you’ll never know what else is in store on this exciting tour: museums, historical landmarks or even a dip in the Caribbean Sea. Be prepared for anything and come ready to have fun! Please note: guests must be at least 6 years of age to take part. The tour is considered to be unsuitable for guests with mobility problems. Each team will be issued with a mobile phone to contact a tour guide if the need arises; guides will also keep an eye on participants throughout the tour. At least one individual per team must be prepared to go in the sea (flotation devices will be provided). Individuals will be placed in teams of 2-10 participants.

        Saint Maarten

        Ivory beaches and turquoise waters
        Ivory beaches and turquoise waters

One island , two identities. Sint Maarten, the southern part belonging to Holland whilst the northern part, Saint Martin, to France.

On a cruise to Saint-Martin you will disembark in the Dutch capital of Philipsburg, just a few kilometers from the airport.

From the beautiful Maho Beach, at one end of the runway you can see low flying airliners passing over the beach: a real sight!

Just to the east, is the great Simpson Bay which offers two choices: breakfast at the Yacht Club bar on the Isle de Sol, where some of the most interesting mega-yachts cruising the Caribbean are moored; or the beach of Kim Sha, with palm trees, white sands and turquoise water (if you are looking for other typical Caribbean beaches then head for Bay Rouge, Plum Bay, Long Bay and Mullet Bay, which has tourist facilities).

In the French part of the island  Orient Beach, in Orient Bay, facing the island of Tintamarre is the nudist beach which is perhaps the best known and most appreciated naturalist beach in the Caribbean.

Saint Martin also means shopping; in the capital, Marigot, you can find a daily French market as well as more than 100 stalls on the sea shore full of spices, fruit and vegetables, rum and local handicrafts.
