Hiroshige's art in the shadow of Mount Fuji

The allure of Japan is undisputed. The scenery takes your breath away and instils a sense of peace. Your MSC Cruise will stop off at one of the most scenic spots in the Land of the Rising Sun: Shimizu, in the Japanese prefecture of Shizouka, on HonshūIsland.

An excursion will take you to the Tokaido Hiroshige Art Museum. Hiroshige is one of the most important masters of traditional Japanese woodcuts. The museum houses 1,400 prints divided into themes. You can also participate in a traditional tea ritual, a not-to-miss experience to enjoy with all your senses.

For a unique experience immersed in nature, there is also an excursion to the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park: here you can admire the enchanting beauty of Mount Fuji ‒ the famous volcano which at 12,389 feet high dominates the island ‒ and its five lakes ‒ Kawaguchi, Yamanaka, Sai, Motosu and Shoji – at 1,000 meters above sea level, as well as the town of Hakone, the Izu Islands and the Izu Peninsula.

You can also book an excursion to the Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. This is a place of worship dedicated to the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, who lived between 1543 and 1616. The warlord succeeded in unifying Japan after a long period of civil wars. During the last years of his life, spent in the nearby Sumpu Castle, Ieyasu ordered a mausoleum to be built on Mount Kunozan. Over 2,000 weapons and documents belonging to General Tokugawa are preserved in the monument, the second most important in Japan after the Nikko Toshogu Shrine.
