Falmouth

A breath-taking bay

It’s easy to visit Falmouth on your Caribbean and Antilles cruise to Jamaica. A city whose most impressive constructions – the sagging Tharp House, the porticoed post office in the middle of Market Street, and the old courthouse, built overlooking the sea in 1895 – are still in commercial or municipal use, on your arrival you are immediately struck by the conical roof of the 1810 Phoenix Foundry.

To the east, along with several dilapidated stone warehouses behind the locked gates of Central Wharf, it’s where sugar, rum and slaves were shipped and traded during Falmouth’s heyday. Nearby, the stately Baptist Manse is thought to have been inhabited by Baptist minister and anti-slavery campaigner William Knibb.

Once ruined, the manse was carefully and extensively restored ten years ago and now the renovated structure houses a spacious and light-filled gallery upstairs, with various art-based community projects taking over the ground floor.

The chunky William Knibb Memorial Baptist Church is another place of worship you can enjoy during your cruise excursion. Some 35km from Falmouth, Jamaica’s second largest city, Montego Bay nestles between the gently sloping Bogue, Kempshot and Salem hills.

It's made up of two distinct parts: the main tourist strip Gloucester Avenue, and the city proper, universally referred to as “downtown”; a split so sharp that most tourists never venture further than the dividing roundabout. The "Hip Strip" wouldn't exist were it not for Montego Bay's prize asset: a dazzling bay with miles of coral reef (now designated a marine park) and some beautiful beaches.

Much of the coastline has been snapped up by the hotels, but there are three main public beaches along the length of Gloucester Avenue, all with showers, changing rooms, snack outlets and watersports concessions and a minimal entrance fee.

              ACTIVE & ADVENTURE

              FMH03

Treat yourself to bags of fun on this exciting and scenic river tubing tour down the Martha Brae River, giving you plenty of time to both enjoy the ride and the spectacular landscape to either side. The river itself is said to have been named after the ancient legend of an Arawak witch called Martha Brae who is alleged to have known where gold was stashed. With the aim of seizing the hoard, the greedy Spaniards then captured the witch and forced her to show them the way. However, far from taking them to a Jamaican El Dorado, the witch led the unsuspecting Spaniards to a cave they only believed to hold their prize. On the witch’s release, she invoked a spell that changed the course of the river, causing the cavern to flood. You can make up your own mind as to what might have happened to the Spaniards. The waters of the Martha Brae are known to contain precious stones – some of which you may spot – and also represent the route that runaway slaves would take in days gone by in a quest for freedom. To round off your tour, you can pay the so-called Trading House a visit, the only store of its kind in the Caribbean, to browse through the merchandise or purchase souvenirs, pottery and photos. Please note: food can be purchased at an additional cost and storage lockers are available for rent. Max. weight per guest is 250 lbs. The tour is not recommended for pregnant women. Guests are recommended to wear swimwear under outer clothing, to use sunscreen and insect repellent as well as to bring a towel. Guests must be at least 6 years of age to take part.

                FMH06

After leaving the ship and boarding the coach, a scenic drive first takes you to Rose Hall Great House, an outstanding relic of colonial times with a fascinating and detailed history rich in dark rumour and intrigue. Legend has it that the 19th-century mistress of Rose Hall, the Haitian-born white witch Annie Palmer, a practitioner of the voodoo faith, rid herself of three unfortunate husbands, all of whom died an inexplicable, sudden and violent death. Although she maintained her innocence and indeed no evidence to support the allegations was ever found, she gained a reputation for extreme cruelty and her nickname as the “White Witch of Rose Hall”. Locals claim that Annie’s restless spirit has roamed the grounds of Rose Hall ever since her untimely death during a slave uprising in 1830. Before you leave the Great House, you will also have a chance to do some souvenir shopping in the duty-free store. The tour then continues to Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville by the sea, in the heart of Montego Bay’s so-called “Hip Strip” for a cool tropical drink before you return to the port and your ship.

Next up on the itinerary is Dolphin Cove, where you will be welcomed with a complimentary glass of juice. A briefing then follows, after which you can enter the world of dolphins, undoubtedly some of nature’s most fascinating creatures. From the comfort and safety of an interaction platform situated in shallow water, you can then get to know these wonderful aquatic mammals. Who could resist the chance of tickling a dolphin’s tummy or shaking a friendly fin? After your unforgettable up-close-and-personal dolphin encounter, you will still have time to watch these playful creatures in their natural habitat, the Caribbean Sea. NATURAL WONDERS

                FMH30

As one of Jamaica’s best-preserved colonial towns, Falmouth is blessed with a slew of beautiful Georgian architecture that this tour will first take you to see, including the late 18th-century St. Peter’s Anglican church. Moving on, you’ll head through some of Jamaica’s bucolic villages to reach the Green Grotto Caves. A frisson of excitement awaits you here as you venture underground to inspect the fabulous cave system, said to have provided the Taíno – Jamaica’s indigenous people – with shelter at one point. But the complex is also known by many other names, including Runaway Cave for harbouring fleeing slaves in the 18th century and Rum Cave for providing sanctuary for smugglers. Whatever it was that warranted Dairy Cave and the Hopewell & Dry Harbour Caves as further monikers, one thing is certain: the grotto has seen a lot of action over the years. As you step into the caves, prepare to marvel at the stalactites, stalagmites and other impressive dripstone formations. At a depth of 37 m, you’ll then reach the innermost sanctum of this amazing place, the name-giving green grotto and its crystal-clear pool. On your way back to the surface, you’ll pass a wishing well where you can toss in a coin and make a wish. The coach ride back to the pier and your ship then sees the tour draw to a leisurely close. Please note: the tour is considered to be unsuitable for guests with mobility problems.

                NATURAL WONDERS

                FMH27

It’s 1969 and an American known as Ross Kananga heads for Jamaica, not in search of holiday thrills, but to pursue an entirely more adventurous end: to found a crocodile farm in the virgin mangrove swamps near Falmouth. The venture that began in late 1970 along with two local friends quickly drew the crowds and has since grown to provide a sanctuary for much more than just crocodiles. A short drive will first take you through the pretty Georgian town of Falmouth to reach the Village, after which your guided swamp safari will begin. Prepare to hold your breath as Buddy, intrepid croc wrangler by trade, handles these amazing reptiles, sneak a peek at the (non-poisonous) Jamaican yellow snake, look upwards to see rare birds as you stroll through the aviary and get your fill of cute-looking critters like Jamaican coneys, collared peccaries, coatimundis, agoutis, tayras and spotted pacas. A visit to the Kananga House will then transport you to the world of film when you find out how the famous croc-jumping scene was shot for the 1972 Bond movie, “Live & Let Die”. Continue the Bond moment when you sip a refreshing tropical drink at the Village Bar before setting off on your journey back to the ship. Please note: as the open-air safari involves longer periods of walking and standing in the heat, guests are recommended to wear a hat and sunglasses as well as bring/use sunscreen.

              Stunning landscapes

Rightly famous for its beaches and music, beautiful, brash Jamaica is much more besides. There’s certainly plenty of white sand, turquoise Caribbean sea and swaying palm trees, but there are also spectacular mountains and rivers, tumbling waterfalls and cactus-strewn savannah plains.

Far more than just a resort, the island also boasts vibrant towns and cities such as sprawling Kingston, which inspired the music of Bob Marley and countless other home-grown reggae superstars.
Jamaica is a country with a swagger in its step; proud of its history, sporting success and musical genius; but also with a weight upon its shoulders.

As the birthplace of the “all-inclusive” hotel, Jamaica is well suited to those travellers who want to head straight from their cruise ships to the beach. But to get any sense of the country at all during your cruise to Jamaica, you’ll need to do some exploring.

It’s undoubtedly worth it, as this is an island packed with first-class attractions, oozing with character and rich with a musical and cultural heritage; if you’re a reggae fan, you’re in heaven.
