Portuguese is spoken here and ‘Recife’ (pronounced ‘hee-see-fee’) means ‘reef’, in reference to the reefs that are found off-shore and which you can swim around during your stay here.

 BRREC01 - RECIFE & OLINDA Duration: 4 hours - 2013/2014

Starting with a panoramic tour of Recife including the three main islands (Recife, Santo Antonio and Boa Vista), the Mauricio de Nassau bridge and the Republic square (Home of the Governmental palace, the Santa Isabel theatre and the Justice Palace), before an unforgettable visit at Casa da Cultura located in the Capibarive river side, a charming building that was built in the 19 century as a former prison which has been transformed into a local art center with hand craft stores and restaurants. The second part is the city of Olinda, situated in the top of a hill where you will be transported by van to avoid the long and uphill walk. At the old capital, with grand houses and colonial churches you will see the Alto da Sé, Sé Church and Misericordia Church, where you can admire the most beautiful view of Olinda and Recife. During Carnival the people use its narrow streets to parade the traditional “puppets like the midnight men or following the “carnival blocks” such as Pitombeira and Elephants and before returning to the port you will visit the São Bento Monastery. Olinda is considered a Natural and Cultural patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO. Remarks: Queues may be expected in Olinda. This excursion is not advisable for guests with walking difficult or wheelchairs. The entrance ticket to the São Bento Monastery is included in the value of the excursion. Nicknamed the “Brazilian Venice” because of its numerous canals and waterways, Recife is a major gateway on the north-eastern coast and the capital of the state of Pernambuco. On board an uncovered boat we will start a visit of the city along the Capibaribe River with a chance to admire Recife from a completely different perspective. Last century it was a disembarkation port for slaves, today is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. Its crystal clear waters, palm trees, natural swimming pools and water sports infrastructure guarantees an unforgettable day. Departing from Recife in a southerly direction for approximately 90 minutes to arrive in Porto de Galinhas you will see large sugar cane plantations, palm trees, small rural communities, and fishermen’s boats. There will be enough time to enjoy the beach or take a pleasant strolls to take stunning pictures. There are optional rides on small wooden boats at the beach (not included in the value of the excursion). Porto de Galinhas offers the ideal life concept with natural beauty where you may enjoy your peace of mind atmosphere like the small fishing villages. In Itamaraca our visit will include the Orange Fortress built by the Dutch on the XVII century and beautifully located by the ocean. After the fortress we will board a Catamaran for 20 minutes crossing of the ocean to the island of "Coroa do Avião", a paradisiacal beach in an island with an airplane shape for approximately 3 hours of relaxing under the sun and bathing. The coconut trees setting make Carneiros a beautiful example of many of the Northern Brazilian Beaches. Guadalupe is located 90 kms south from Recife (approximately 2 hours transfer time each way). It is a cultural institution located in the city of Recife, Brazil. It is a not-for-profit private organization, inaugurated in 2002 by the Brazilian collector and businessman Ricardo Brenand. It comprises a museum, an art gallery, a library and a large park. The Institute holds a permanent collection of historic and artistic objects of diversified proveniences, ranging from Early Middle Ages to 20th century, with strong emphasis in objects, documents and artwork related to Colonial and Dutch Brazil, including the world's largest assemblage of paintings by Frans Post. The Institute also houses one of the largest collections of armory in the world, with 3,000 pieces, the majority of which produced in Europe and Asia between the 14th and 19th century. The library has 20,000 volumes, ranging from 16th to 20th century, including a collection of Brazilian and other rare items.
