Excellent beaches, emerald-green waters and great diving opportunities
The town of Porto Belo is located south of Rio de Janeiro on the Atlantic Ocean.
Christopher Columbus stopped here in 1502 along his fourth journey to the New World and legend has it that he pulled into the sheltered bay following a storm and subsequently named it Porto Belo, meaning ‘beautiful port’.
Over the next two centuries the town became a major trading hub and one of the most important ports in the Caribbean, as gold from South America was stored and traded here.
Today Porto Belo is renowned for its excellent beaches, emerald-green waters and great diving opportunities.
