        Saint Anthony, or Anthony the Great as he is also known, was a Christian saint from Egypt who lived c. A.D. 241 to 356 and was a prominent leader among the so-called Desert Fathers. These hermits, ascetics and monks mainly lived in the Egyptian desert around the third century A.D.. As one of the oldest in the world, the Coptic Orthodox Monastery of St. Anthony is tucked away deep in the Red Sea mountains about a 2-hour drive from the port and your ship. Founded in A.D.356 by the hermit’s followers near the cave that housed St. Anthony in solitude until he died (aged 105!), the monastery itself and the way its inhabitants live have changed only little over the centuries. Of particular interest are the 13th-century frescos that decorate the church.
