Starting with a 2.5-hour coach drive through amazing landscapes, you will first head for what is one of the world’s largest cities with a population of some 16 million people in its greater metropolitan area. And since no visit to Cairo would be complete without seeing the famous pyramids, a visit to the sizeable archaeological site at Giza then follows. In addition to an outside viewing of the pyramids of Khufu, Khafra and Menkaure, you will also have a chance to see the incredible Valley Temple and the world-famous Sphinx. Next up is a visit to the fascinating Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, a vast repository of artefacts that includes the treasure of Tutenkhamun. Starting with an enjoyable 2-hour coach ride, the tour first heads for Cairo, which is not just Egypt’s largest city, but one of the largest in the world with nearly 16 million inhabitants in its greater metropolitan area. Your first stop gives you a chance to see the medieval Islamic fortification of Saladin’s Citadel and the co-located Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali, whose elevated location near the centre of Cairo ensures wonderful views of the city below. First up is a stop in Cairo’s old Islamic area and a visit to Bab el-Fotouh gate, which was built by the Fatimid dynasty in the 11th century and is the oldest in the city. Continuing on foot, you will then visit the beautiful Al-Hakim Mosque en route to Cairo’s most iconic bazaar, the vibrant Khan el-Khalili. This shopper’s paradise and photographer’s dream is an open invitation to haggle while you shop for gold, silver, bronze and copper, precious stones, deliciously aromatic exotic spices, leather goods and a whole host of other merchandise. Add to that the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the elaborately carved wooden doors of the bazaar’s numerous coffee shops, the captivating sound of oriental music and throngs of colourfully dressed people and you have a scene taken directly out of “1001 Arabian Nights”. You can then rest your legs on a traditional Egyptian felucca boat and enjoy gorgeous views of Cairo from the river while you have a 5-star lunch on board. The port’s mild climate is owed to the presence of a natural hot sulphured spring, the Arabic term for which actually gave the city its name. As a destination that is popular with holidaymakers throughout the year, the resort naturally also boasts various splendid beaches as well as clean, crystal-clear water – perfect for indulging in the fine art of doing absolutely nothing. A short, 30-minute drive from the port will take you to a leading seafront hotel where you can then spend a few hours doing what holidays are for: relaxing, swimming, sunbathing and beachcombing in the tranquil surroundings of the luxury resort.  SOK08 - THE MONASTERY OF ST. ANTHONY (approx. 6 hours) - 2013/2014
Level of difficulty: moderate  Panoramic Tour  Limited Availability  Cultural  Saint Anthony, or Anthony the Great as he is also known, was a Christian saint from Egypt who lived c. A.D. 241 to 356 and was a prominent leader among the so-called Desert Fathers. These hermits, ascetics and monks mainly lived in the Egyptian desert around the third century A.D.. As one of the oldest in the world, the Coptic Orthodox Monastery of St. Anthony is tucked away deep in the Red Sea mountains about a 2-hour drive from the port and your ship. Founded in A.D.356 by the hermit’s followers near the cave that housed St. Anthony in solitude until he died (aged 105!), the monastery itself and the way its inhabitants live have changed only little over the centuries. Of particular interest are the 13th-century frescos that decorate the church. Your excursion to this hidden gem is rounded off by a scenic return drive back to the port and your ship.Please note: as this tour involves walking on uneven ground, it is not recommend for guests with walking difficulties. Explanations inside the Monastery are given by monks and only in English. Conservative attire is recommended for visiting sites of religious importance.
