One of the world's best hangouts, where funky design boutiques brush shoulders with traditional stepped-gable houses

Amsterdam is one of the world's best hangouts, an enjoyable blend of old and new, where funky design boutiques brush shoulders with traditional stepped-gable houses.

The city thrives on an eclectic, fashionable mix and despite being a highly popular vacation Amsterdam still manages to retain its soul and preserve its quintessentially Dutch feel.

If you’re in the mood for great shopping, a dose of culture, an injection of art and architecture or a pleasant stroll around pretty canal-side streets, don’t hesitate to choose Amsterdam as a great day away from your luxury MSC cruise ship. Your ship will dock in the port of Amsterdam itself, from where we will transport you to the city centre or further afield, depending on the itinerary you have chosen.

Our day trip packages for Amsterdam cater to all guest tastes and we aim to provide the best key attractions. Joining us on the ‘Windmills and Canals’ trip is the ideal way to get to the heart of Dutch culture! Not only are there great photo opportunities of Holland ’s most famous landmarks, you can sample the delicious locally-produced Edam cheese.

Travelling with children? We’ll bring history to life and show them how people lived in times gone by with a trip to Volendam, a living museum where the inhabitants dress in traditional costume. Finally, for art-lovers, the Van Gogh Museum will undoubtedly represent a high point of their MSC Mediterranean Cruise vacation, and is not to be missed.

Cruise to Amsterdam - Netherlands - Northen Europe - MSC Cruises

Directions

Port of Amsterdam: cruise ships dock at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, from where visitors can easily walk to the centre. The terminal has a large reception hall, extensive catering and shopping facilities and tourist information office. The Central Station and bus terminal, with its arrival and departure hall for coaches, means easy links for travelers across the country. The Amsterdam cruise terminal is busy in season, hosting some 100 ships from spring through fall. The terminal, near the start of the new Eastern Docklands development, is a 10-minute walk or a five-minute ride from Central Station, where all of the city’s bus, trolley and boat lines can be boarded.

Port average temperature

Amsterdam has a cool oceanic climate, strongly influenced by its proximity to the North Sea to the west, with prevailing north-western winds and gales. Winter temperatures are mild, seldom below 0°C. Amsterdam, as well as most of North-Holland province, lies in USDA Hardiness zone 9, the northernmost such occurrence in continental Europe. Frosts mainly occur during spells of easterly or northeasterly winds from the inner European continent, from Scandinavia, Russia, or even Siberia. Even then, because Amsterdam is surrounded on three sides by large bodies of water, as well as enjoying a significant heat island effect, nights rarely fall below –5°C, while it could easily be –12°C in Hilversum, 25 kilometers southeast.

Summers are moderately warm but rarely hot. The average daily high in August is 22°C and 30°C or higher is only measured on average on 3 days, placing Amsterdam in AHS Heat zone 2. Days with measurable precipitation are common, on average 175 days per year. Nevertheless, Amsterdam's average annual precipitation is less than 760 mm. Most of this precipitation is in the form of protracted drizzle or light rain, making cloudy and damp days common during the cooler months of October through March. Only the occasional European windstorm brings significant rain in a short period of time, requiring it to be pumped out to higher ground or to the seas around the city.

The temperate figures shown are based on monthly average weather conditions for the selected port. Weather data is not real-time, and sometimes no data is shown for a specific date, month or port in general.

Difficulty level: moderate - May involve inclines, steps, uneven surfaces and/or extended periods of standing  Panoramic tour  Limited seat  Dutch traditions are the theme of this excursion which takes you from the port by coach for a guided tour of the windmill village of Zaanse Schans. The name derives from the defending wall “Schans”, which was erected at the end of XVI century for the war against the Spanish. From Zaanse Schans we will continue through the countryside to a local cheese farm to learn about the age-old process of cheese making.
