Tenerife

Located just off the coast of Africa, Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary Island archipelago.

The showcase of Spanish culture

Located just off the coast of Africa, Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary Island archipelago.

The island name literally means white (Ife) mountain (Tene) in reference to the year-round snows found on top of the country’s El Teide volcano.

From its warm weather and beaches to art galleries and museums, Tenerife has a wide variety of attractions that showcase the Spanish culture present here since the late 1400’s.

The mysterious pyramids of Güímar and the rugged cliffs along the shoreline make Tenerife a holiday destination characterised by beauty. Spend a day away from your MSC cruise ship and join us on one of our carefully-planned excursions, all of which offer great deals on local sights.

Your ship will dock in the port of Santa Cruz and from there you can explore the island with us. Tenerife really offers something to suit every taste, from nature-lovers to shopaholics!

Spend the day in Puerto de la Cruz and enjoy a mix of shopping and sightseeing. Take time out in the pretty botanical gardens which thrive in the island’s tropical Mediterranean climate. Epicureans should join us on the ‘Taste of Tenerife’ tour, which offers an introduction to local cheeses and wines. Keen photographers may like the off-road jeep adventure with stunning photo opportunities.

A sure-fire way to guarantee that little ones enjoy their vacation as much as you is to offer them an afternoon at the magnificent Loro Parque, where children of all ages will love the gorillas, tigers and penguins.

Port average temperature

Tenerife is known internationally as the "Island of Eternal Spring" (Isla de la Eterna Primavera). The island, being on a latitude of the Sahara Desert, enjoys a warm climate year-round with an average of 20° - 22°C in the winter and 26° - 28°C in the summer and high sunshine totals.

The moderate climate of Tenerife is controlled to a great extent by the tradewinds, whose humidity, principally, is condensed over the north and northeast of the island, creating cloud banks that range between 600 and 1,800 meters in height. The cold sea currents of the Canary Islands, also have a cooling effect on the coasts and its beaches and the topography of the landscape plays a role in climatic differences on the island with its many valleys

The temperate figures shown are based on monthly average weather conditions for the selected port. Weather data is not real-time, and sometimes no data is shown for a specific date, month or port in general.

 TEN07WI - OROTAVA & PUEBLO CHICO (approx. 4 hours) - 2013/2014
Level of difficulty: easy  Panoramic Tour  Recommended for families  A varied and entertaining half-day excursion awaits you that begins with a short coach ride through Tenerife’s exciting landscape to reach your first destination: the Orotava Valley and the small town of La Orotava. Founded in the 15th century by some of the wealthy families who lived on the island, the town has retained many appealing remains of its medieval beginnings. You will have a chance to take a stroll through the centre of the small town to reach the famous Casa de los Balcones, a 17th-century three-storey building that features pinewood balconies and patios to the front. The Casa is a typical example of what an aristocrat’s house would have looked like in the Canary Islands in this bygone age. Afterwards, you will have some free time to explore the co-located artwork complex and perhaps buy one of the exclusive locally made artisan products as a souvenir to take home. The tour then continues on to the nearby Pueblo Chico, a wonderful “miniature” theme park in the middle of the countryside with the majestic Mount Teide as its backdrop. Depicting various buildings, landscapes and historical regions from all over Tenerife and the neighbouring islands at a scale of 1:25, this marvellous open-air attraction will take you on a miniature round-trip of the Canary Islands’ most iconic sights – guaranteed to be great fun for the entire family. Return to the port. Please note: this tour includes an approx. 1-hour walk; the tour is suitable for guests using a wheelchair, although there may be limitations at Orotava.
