Ibiza

The Spanish island of Ibiza, one of the Balearic Islands, has earned a reputation for being a Mecca for partygoers and young holidaymakers. But this historic island also has another side – popular with hippies and artists during the 70’s, Ibiza has long been a chic retreat for worldly and artistic travellers.

The 'white island'

The Spanish island of Ibiza, one of the Balearic Islands, has earned a reputation for being a Mecca for partygoers and young holidaymakers. But this historic island also has another side – popular with hippies and artists during the 70’s, Ibiza has long been a chic retreat for worldly and artistic travellers.

Our luxury MSC Cruises ships call at the ‘white island’ (so named for the many white washed houses) enabling passengers to visit Ibiza town and the surrounding area. Ibiza town does have a dual personality, being a pleasant, historical and typical Spanish seaside resort during the day, transformed into a clubbing haven at night.

However, Ibiza can cater to all tastes, and the variety of our excursion packages pays testament to the range of activities to do here. Once off the cruise ship, you can spend a very pleasant day exploring Ibiza old town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) or on one of the island’s 80+ beaches.

If you have euro to spend, head to one of the islands’ many handicraft markets which sell items by local artists including paintings and jewellery, and which make original souvenirs. The Archeological Museum is located in the Dalt Vila (old town) and contains a collection of works of art from the island dating from prehistoric times to the 15th century.

As we always strive to offer passengers the best deals on local sights, simply select your preferred type of excursion from the MSC Cruises program.

IBI07 - THE HIPPIE MARKET OF ES CANAR (approx. 3 hours) - 2013
Level of difficulty: easy  No guide available  A short coach drive will take you to the Hippie Market of Es Canar, located on the premises of a popular tourist destination. It all began in 1973 when the resort management decided it would be a good idea to give the local hippies a chance to peddle their goods to a small resident population of tourists spending a few days on holiday in Club Punta Arabi. From the initial 6 stands in 1973, with Maggie selling her wonderful cakes, a lady coming from Formentera offering warm woolly sweaters, another person hawking Indian jewellery and children swapping toys to the rhythm of violins, guitars and jam sessions, the so-called "mercadillo" has since developed into a real tourist attraction on Ibiza. You will have 2 hours to explore the colourful market and the stands that sell every item you can imagine before returning to your ship. Please note: this tour is available only for guests onboard MSC Orchestra.
