Historic monuments and elegant squares
Located in Emilia-Romagna, a region in the north east of Italy, the handsome city of Ravenna lies inland and is connected to the Adriatic Sea via a canal. Despite its inland location, there is a large industrial port on the canal and a cruise passenger terminal further out of town, enabling MSC cruise ships to call here.
Ravenna is famous for its mosaics, which are housed in five of the city’s churches and monuments; these spectacular 5th and 6th century mosaics have been given UNESCO World Heritage status. Of particular note are the Basilica of San Vitale and Church of Saint Apollinare Nuovo, although we recommend you join our guided city tour (see our excursion packages) for fun and informative talks on these ancient treasures.
Spend your day off your luxury cruise ship exploring the city, which is less touristy than other major Italian cities. You will marvel at the many historic monuments before enjoying refreshments in the elegant squares and typical plaza restaurants that serve outstanding local cuisine. Whilst on vacation here, sample the ‘piadina’ flatbread sandwich as well as plenty of pasta (notably lasagna and capelletta), which originates from this region!
Ravenna will prove a delightful addition to your Mediterranean cruise holiday, as will the ‘art cities’ in the surrounding area. We’ll help you maximize your time here with carefully-planned day trips, the best deals on local sights and an introduction to this lesser-known but much-loved region.
