The municipal area and port of Igoumenitsa are quite modern, but the town is actually built on the remains of an ancient settlement dating back to the 4th century B.C.. Excavations carried out in the course of time have even revealed the ruins of an ancient 2,500-seater theatre and two temples. As a hub of maritime activity with frequent ferry services to Italy and other destinations in Europe, the town is growing at a brisk pace. The pleasing ambience of its steep, winding streets make it fun to discover on foot. Be sure to visit the ruins of the medieval tower and stop to explore any one of the lovely churches you are sure to pass along the way.
Thanks to its favourable location on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea with the foothills of the mountains stretching out behind, the seaport also forms the threshold to Greece’s Thesprotia region, characterised by numerous valley farms, rugged countryside and beautiful beaches, for instance in the nearby Syvota, one of Igoumenitsa’s municipal units.
