Formerly known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka is an ancient island country in the north Indian Ocean that has maritime borders with India and the Maldives. It has a documented history that spans over 3000 years, and is also home to the first known Buddhist texts.
It has traditionally been a very important strategic location, was a key link in the spice route, and played an important role in World War II because of its deep natural ports.
It is also a very beautiful country, and as you approach aboard your luxury MSC cruise ship, you’ll quickly see why it’s known as “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”. Expect striking green mountains rising out of an azure sea, lovely locals from the moment you step ashore (it’s also known a “The Land of the Smiling People”) and lush tropical forests trilling with wildlife if you travel inland.
You will dock in Colombo, which is the nation’s main port and cultural capital, where you can take your pick from a host of activities, whether it’s relaxing with a King Coconut drink in Galle Face Green, visiting beautiful Buddhist temples, setting your watch by Asia’s oldest clock tower on a city tour, taking in some bird watching in the Talangama Wetlands, discovering Sri Lanka’s ancient history in the National Museum, or taking it easy on the nearby Mount Lavinia beach.
