Endless sunshine, pristine beaches, palm trees and a free trade zone? Team a visit to Freeport in the Bahamas with a sublime cruise holiday with MSC Cruises.
Founded in 1955 on an area of scrubland and swamp, Freeport is a young city that has grown into the second-most populous in the whole of the Bahamas. As a free trade zone, Freeport is known as a shopper’s delight for all sorts of luxury items.
The city is also home to numerous perfectly white sandy beaches that are an open invitation to spend time, let the world go by and simply kick back and relax. With coral reefs just off shore, the invitingly warm Caribbean Sea is awash with spectacular marine wildlife just waiting to be explored. Unsurprisingly, scuba diving and snorkelling are popular pastimes, as are parasailing, jet-skiing and – for a more sedate way of admiring the abundant wildlife – glass-bottomed boat tours.
A must-see on your Freeport cruise is the beautiful Garden of the Groves, which has now been restored to its former glory after devastation struck the botanical gardens in the form of a hurricane in 2004. The generously dimensioned and meticulously landscaped area is a true delight and best explored at leisure.
Scenic destinations can also be found at the Rand National Park and the Lucayan National Park, which was used as a film set for the second and third instalments of the Pirates of the Caribbean. The park sits on top of a vast system of underground limestone caves that are famed for their outstanding natural beauty.
