A short coach ride from the port will take you to the old medina quarter, which is a UNESCO world heritage site and boasts some 700 monuments, including historical palaces, mosques, mausoleums and fountains. It is also where spectacular architectural beauty meets a shopper’s delight: the typical and traditional spice market with hundreds of stalls selling a huge variety of local produce. After the medina, you will head to the superb Bardo Museum, a former 13th century palace famous for its outstanding collection of mosaics and major findings from Carthage. The Bardo is akin to the Louvre in its extensive and impressive collection of exhibits. You will enjoy a guided tour of some of the rooms to admire the most significant displays, including the exquisite Virgil Room, which houses a spectacular 3rd century mosaic from Sousse. Time for a break to taste a delicious lunch before continuing to archaeological site of Carthage, a city from the 6th century B.C. that was once the base of a powerful trading empire. Its most famous citizen was Hannibal, the general who crossed the Alps to do battle with the Romans. You will have a chance to visit the baths of Antonius before continuing to the little fishing village of Sidi Bou Said, which was founded by Andalusian Arabs and is known particularly for the consistent white-and-blue colour scheme of the houses all throughout the town. You will have time to soak up the special charm of the village on your own before beginning your return trip to the port. Please note: the museum visit in Sidi Bou Said is optional and not included in the price; guests must pay the entrance fee if they wish to visit.
