As Germany’s only permanently inhabited North Sea island, Heligoland rises out of the water as a mass of red sandstone that provides a habitat for a unique flora and fauna. Famed for its mild climate, this lovely little island is ideal to explore on foot. Starting in the little lanes of the so-called Lower Land along with its typical lobster booths, art galleries and antiques’ stores, the tour then proceeds to the so-called Upper Land for a brief stop at the “Lummenfelsen” (Birds’ Rock), located about 70 metres above sea level.    Due to its ideal strategic North Sea location, the island of Heligoland was developed as a sea fortification during the 19th and 20th centuries. As part of these activities, a bunker was created for the purpose of accommodating 3,500 people during WWII. After the war, the British used the island as a detonation site for seized ammunition. The 6,700 tonnes of explosives detonated by the British in 1947 – known as the “Big Bang” – has gone down in history as the biggest non-nuclear explosion ever. It also changed the topology of the island and created the so-called Middle Land. The remaining parts of the bunker are open to the public today.    As Heligoland’s “kid sister”, the tiny island of Düne – once joined to Heligoland until a storm separated the two in 1721 – is also called the “Jewel of Heligoland” due to its beautiful sandy beaches and lovely landscape.     The tour first heads to the city of Stirling, with its towering Wallace Monument and imposing castle, set high atop a rocky hill overlooking the whole of the surrounding area. Located at the centre of Scotland, the city was of huge strategic importance in the past. Visit and explore the historic castle and its magnificent architecture as well as enjoy the Royal Palace, which has been returned to its former glory. The visit ends with a visit to the tapestry studio to see world-class weavers restoring one of the world’s finest surviving sets of medieval tapestries.      This excursion to the Beamish Open Air Museum will take you on a trip back in time. After receiving an introduction to the site and a map, you will have time to explore the complex at your leisure. To help you get around, the museum operates a fleet of restored old trams that travel along a circular route with stops near all the key exhibits. Visit Pockerley Manor and the Clydesdale horses and Dales ponies in The Horse Yard. Also stop at the Running Shed to see the 1822 locomotive that was built by George Stephenson and is said to be the third-oldest surviving railway engine in the world. The Town Centre is also worth a visit with costumed interpreters welcoming visitors and demonstrating a bygone way of life in the many shops. There is even a reconstruction of a Freemasonic Temple which gives an insight to the Freemasonry of the period.     On leaving the port, you will first head towards the city centre of Newcastle. Dating from pre-Roman times, the city grew during the industrial revolution through the mining of coal and building of ships. It still boasts several grand Victorian building in addition to the famous bridges over the River Tyne.    Dover is famous for its white cliffs, which stand guard at the gateway to England; these famous chalk faces have been immortalized in song, literature and art. Composed of millions of small sea creatures and coral from the bottom of the sea, the chalk is soft and easily worn away by waves, so the cliffs are continuously eroding.
