The tour first heads to the city of Stirling, with its towering Wallace Monument and imposing castle, set high atop a rocky hill overlooking the whole of the surrounding area. Located at the centre of Scotland, the city was of huge strategic importance in the past. Visit and explore the historic castle and its magnificent architecture as well as enjoy the Royal Palace, which has been returned to its former glory. The visit ends with a visit to the tapestry studio to see world-class weavers restoring one of the world’s finest surviving sets of medieval tapestries. The excursion continues with a scenic drive through the rugged heather-covered mountains of the Trossachs – the miniature highlands – and will also pass Loch Venacher on the way. Enjoy the wonderful scenery of the Pennines and County Durham during this panoramic tour to the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall. The tour begins by skirting the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, before heading west through the Tyne valley. This area is dominated by the presence of Hadrian’s Wall, which was built by the Romans in the 2nd century as the northern limit of their empire and to stop the barbarian hordes attacking from the north. Departing the quayside at the port of Tyne, the tour first heads to Tynemouth, a pretty village overlooking the North Sea, before heading north along the coast through Whitely Bay and past the former coal mining community of Ashington. From here the coastline opens up to a wide expanse of empty beaches separated by small fishing villages including Amble, Alnmouth and Warkworth with its ruined castle. The castles of Northumberland reflect the turbulent history of the county. Inland from Alnmouth the tour arrives at Alnwick Castle, the largest and most impressive in the county. This excursion to the Beamish Open Air Museum will take you on a trip back in time. After receiving an introduction to the site and a map, you will have time to explore the complex at your leisure. To help you get around, the museum operates a fleet of restored old trams that travel along a circular route with stops near all the key exhibits. Visit Pockerley Manor and the Clydesdale horses and Dales ponies in The Horse Yard. Also stop at the Running Shed to see the 1822 locomotive that was built by George Stephenson and is said to be the third-oldest surviving railway engine in the world. The Town Centre is also worth a visit with costumed interpreters welcoming visitors and demonstrating a bygone way of life in the many shops. There is even a reconstruction of a Freemasonic Temple which gives an insight to the Freemasonry of the period. The working Home Farm will give you an idea of how the farm was worked and how the farmer's wife spent her busy day in the large farmhouse kitchen, while the Drift Mine with all its workings will show you how mining worked in the Victorian era. Dating from pre-Roman times, the city grew during the industrial revolution through the mining of coal and building of ships. It still boasts several grand Victorian building in addition to the famous bridges over the River Tyne. After leaving the city, a photo stop will be made at the Angel of the North, a huge steel sculpture with wings the size of a jet plane. The tour then continues on to the city of Durham. A coach ride from the port up to Craster, a traditional Northumberland fishing village, will be followed a chance to enjoy rolling landscape, an old-fashioned fishing village, coastal views and the dramatic ruins of a former castle on a circular walk within a designated Area of Outstanding Beauty. Starting at the Arnold Memorial Northumberland Wildlife Trust Reserve, the rural walk will see you reach Howick Hall, the highlight of the tour. As the historical home of the Earls Grey – name givers of the famous tea – the grounds also feature award-winning gardens, which you will have time to explore. Originally conceived in 1920 by the Grey family, these gardens have since been lovingly maintained and still retain their informal and natural feel. HRW02 - THE MEDIEVAL MARKET TOWN OF LAVENHAM (approx. 4 hours) - Harwich, United Kingdom
The tour begins with a 1-hour leisurely drive through the scenic English countryside and along the river Stour via the historic towns of Manningtree and East Bergholt with pleasing views of pastel-washed and warped timber framed buildings. Your destination is the lovely town of Lavenham in the county of Suffolk, which is widely regarded as “England's finest medieval town”. Some of the town’s notable features are its 15th-century church, half-timbered medieval cottages and circular walk. Most of Lavenham’s ancient buildings were built between 1400 and 1500, and the historical centre of the village has remained much as it was at that time. This tour will take you to a city that looks back on a 2000-year history and is Britain’s oldest settlement: Colchester. It was also the first Roman capital of England. The tour includes a call at Colchester Castle Museum, which provides insight into the town’s history. The Norman-built castle dates back to 1076 and the castle’s keep is the largest surviving example in Europe. For most of its life the Castle was used as a prison. One of the most infamous episodes in its history occurred in 1645 when Matthew Hopkins, the self-styled “Witch-finder General”, used the castle to imprison and interrogate women suspected of being witches. The University of Cambridge was first established in the 13th century and has since educated numerous kings, prime ministers, generals, politicians, scientists, writers, actors and a slew of successful comedians. Many of the beautiful college buildings date from the 15th and 16th centuries and offer splendid views over the River Cam. Considered to be the historical capital of Normandy, Rouen is located on the north bank of the river Seine, some 1.5 hours from the sea port of Le Havre. Your guide will introduce you to the old part of the town and take you on a walk down the city’s narrow streets, which are lined with more than 700 timber-framed houses. Enjoy the special atmosphere of Rue St. Romain and then reach the so-called Gros Horloge – an astronomical clock from the 16th century – located in the aptly named Rue du Gros Horloge. The tour then continues on to the Roman Catholic Rouen Cathedral with its Gothic architecture and its so-called “Butter Tower”, which was built in the early 16th century with money appropriated from the local population for the indulgence of eating butter.
