MSC Poesia - Cruise - Caribbean
Port Description - Philipsburg (St. Maarten)
Both the French and the Dutch claim the island of St. Maarten. The powers signed a treaty in 1648 that divided the island between them, though the two sides have distinct cultural characteristics. But it is their differences that add to the charm of this Caribbean hideaway and makes for some of the most delightful cuisine known throughout the world. Between Great Bay and the Great Salt Pond the Dutch capital Philipsburg fills a small stretch of land, and two main roads Front Street and Back Street cut across the city. Front Street is the main thoroughfare, featuring traditional West Indian architecture and duty free shopping of imported goods and native crafts .

SMT11 - “ AMERICA’S CUP” 12 METRE YACHT
|
|
About 4 hours The St. Maarten “America’s Cup” 12 Metre Regatta offers you an opportunity of a lifetime to experience the sport of racing aboard multi-million dollar “America’s Cup” Race boats in the warm blue waters of the Caribbean, combining excitement, the thrill of competition, and a little touch of history. Prior to boarding the yachts, you will be divided into teams, are given a brief introduction to the event and are then tendered out to the yachts. You will “compete” in an actual simulated race around an “America’s Cup” course (shortened), and under the watchful eyes of the experienced crew, are invited to participate in the thrill of sailing these fabulous “greyhounds of the sea”. Each guest is offered a small task and is given instruction by the crewmembers: what commands to expect, and what to do. Then it’s practice time on the way down to the start. The team’s timekeeper (another guest) counts down the minutes and seconds to the start. At the red flag from the committee boat, they’re off. GUESTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Every effort is made to accommodate “Guests with special needs”. However the nature of the St. Maarten “America’s Cup” 12 Metre Regatta is very participatory and the motion of the boats may cause problems for some. We therefore request that a guest with special needs be accompanied by a companion who has the capability of assisting the guest onto and off the boats. If the companion feels at the point of departure that the experience will prove to be too much for the guest, we will be happy to offer a refund for both tickets returned. AGE CONSIDERATIONS. The minimum age is twelve years old: however, there are some young people, typically in a sailing family who have considerable sailing experience; are well aware of the potential hazards of sailing and have been trained to perform accordingly. In these cases, if the young person is accompanied by their parent, at the discretion of the shore excursion manager, we will be pleased to accept young people to a minimum age of seven. FACILITIES As these boats are pure race boats, they have no toilet facilities aboard. Guests should be made aware of this so that they can make prior arrangements. WHAT TO BRING All guests should be asked to wear soft-soled running shoes. T-shirts and shorts over a swimsuit are ideal. There is ample storage space below for beach bags, etc., and a small plastic bag to prevent a camera being splashed is a good idea. |
