Three different languages – Comorian, Arabic and French are spoken on the four islands of Grande Comore, Moheli, Anjouan and Mayotte, (also known as Mahoré).
Formerly under French rule, the Comoros gained independence from France in 1975, apart from Mayotte, which chose to remain a French territory. Hence the language spoken on Mayotte is French, and the Euro is the official currency here.
Mayotte boasts a rich Afro-French cultural heritage, witnessed in the colorful architecture, warm welcome from locals and delicious cuisine. However, the balmy tropical temperatures here will remind you that we are a long way from France.
The climate is conducive to spectucalar flora which flourishes here, notably the Cananga odorata trees which produce the highly scented ylang-ylang flowers, and this may be why Mayotte is also known as the ‘Perfume Island’.
Visitors will experience the rugged, beautiful scenery of Mayotte as soon as the cruise liner docks at the port of Mamoudzou, as the lush hills rise gracefully behind the lively harbor. Once off the ship you can join us on an excursion package, a great way to get to know the island quickly, and a good way to enjoy the best deals on top sights and attractions.
