Zakynthos: A beautiful scenery and a lovely place to spend the day ashore

Zakynthos (also known as Zante) is one of the seven main Greek Ionian islands which are situated in the Ionian Sea and lie off the west coast of Greece.

Zakynthos, with a town of the same name, is our latest addition to MSC Cruises’ Mediterranean itinerary.

Mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey, this ancient place has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Today, a superb Mediterranean climate and a whole host of attractions make Zakynthos a great holiday destination and a lovely place to spend the day off your luxury MSC liner.

We recommend you use our excursion packages to make the best use of your time available and to benefit from the best deals on trips and attractions around the island. Apart from admiring the beautiful island scenery, some may want to take to the waters as the snorkelling and diving opportunities here are excellent.

Nature-lovers and travellers with children can learn more about the Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta Caretta) which sadly are an endangered species but are being looked after and monitored at the turtle rescue centre and Marine Park. Passengers can also leave the ship to board guide boats which will take them to the famous blue caves.

Another fun trip is found on Navagio Beach at Smugglers Bay to view the famous shipwreck; as one of the most photographed beaches in Greece, keen photographers should take their cameras along, too. Round off the day with a spot of vacation shopping in Zakynthos town - the local honey and sesame sweets make great take-home gifts.

 ZTH01 - ZANTE, VOLIMOS & ANAFONITRIA MONASTERY (4 hours) - 2013
Level of difficulty: moderate  Panoramic Tour  Limited Availability  Cultural  Zakynthos is the third-largest of the Ionian Islands and takes its name from Zakynthos, the son of a legendary Arcadian chief, Dardanus. After being completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1953, the town was carefully rebuilt in an effort to recapture its former beauty. Our tour begins with a walk around the town, past Solomos Square with its statue of the poet Dionysos Solomos, who composed the Greek National Anthem. We will then rejoin the bus and continue to Bohali where an old fortress overlooks the town of Zakynthos. Our excursion includes a visit to the Anafonitria Monastery, which dates back to the XIV century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Before returning to the port we will stop at the village of Volimos, famous for its production of lace, rugs and honey, with time at leisure for exploring. Please note: conservative attire is recommended for visiting sites of religious importance. This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties or using a wheelchair.

 ZTH02 - THE COLOURS OF ZAKYTHOS (3 hours) - 2013
Level of difficulty: moderate  Panoramic Tour  Limited Availability  Named after the son of a legendary Arcadian chief, Zakynthos is the third-largest of the Ionian Islands and a popular holiday destination due to its scenic interior, wonderful beaches and friendly atmosphere. This outing takes you on a delightful coach-based tour of the attractive island, with a first stop just outside of Zakynthos city at the small town of Bochali, which is located on a hill that also features an old fortress. Next up on this scenic tour is the village of Machairado, the second-largest on the island and around 10 kilometres to the west of Zakynthos city. After having a look at the fabulous work produced at a ceramics workshop, there will also be time for you to visit the Church of the “Black Madonna”, one of the most famous places of worship on Zakynthos. The final stop on this tour will then be the lively beach resort of Tsilivi, whose attractions include numerous cafés, restaurants and tavernas as well as an old Venetian observatory – called a vardiola – at the northern end of Tsilivi beach. The short, but pretty return drive to the port and your ship brings this appealing tour to a close. Please note: conservative attire is recommended for visiting sites of religious importance.
