Argostoli: Breathtaking mountains dropping down to glittering azure seas

If the name of Argostoli doesn’t sound familiar to vacationers, the name ‘Cefalonia’ (or ‘Kefalonia’) almost certainly will. Yes, the island of Kefalonia provided the setting for the immensely popular film and novel, ‘Captain Corelli's Mandolin’. MSC’s luxury cruise ships stop at the historic port town of Argostoli along our Mediterranean cruise itinerary and fans of the book and film will surely welcome the chance to visit this renowned island.

The island is named after the mythological figure Cephalus, but some contend the name may originate from the word Cephalus, meaning ‘head’ in Greek.

The Romans ruled the limestone Ionian Island from 189 BC, but it was reintegrated into Greece in 1864. Located in the west of the country, the city of Argostoli has become the largest city in the Ionian Islands.

We offer several day trip package ideas to help you maximize your time away from the ship if you choose to come on shore. By guaranteeing the best deals on outings, you can really get to know the island and soak up the history and culture of this lovely setting.

Join the Northern Island drive and take a panoramic tour of the island or, if you’re in the mood for natural thrills, venture down to the spectacular Melissani caves, and add a memorable experience to your cruise vacation.
