Unique architecture and a beautiful harbour
Willemstad is the territorial capital of the Netherlands Antilles on the island of Curaçao. The historic city center consists of two quarters: Punda and Otrobanda, which are separated by the St. Anna bay. Punda was established in 1634 and Otrobanda, founded in 1707, is the newer section of the city and considered to be the cultural centre of Willemstad. Punda and Otrobanda are connected by a long pontoon bridge and both offer an exciting blend of European-style architecture, reminiscent of Amsterdam, with a relaxed Caribbean ambiance. Willemstad boasts an array of colonial architecture that is influenced by Dutch styles; indeed the city center, with its unique architecture and beautiful harbour entry, has been made a UNESCO world heritage site. With a natural deep water harbour, Willemstad can welcome large cruise ships which dock here to take advantage of the local sights.
