Volcanic landscapes and white and black sandy beaches

Cruising the Caribbean probably counts as one of life’s great experiences, and at MSCCruises we strive to make your cruise vacation truly memorable.

Whether you are a seasoned cruise passenger or you’ve never cruised before, we will help you experience your holiday to the full, thanks to our well-appointed luxury liners, our fantastic stop-over destinations and great package deals on day-trip excursions. Fort de France, on the island of Martinique makes for a fantastic day off the ship and has something for all tastes.

Located in the East Caribbean, Martinique is a Mecca for tourists who are drawn by its stunning natural beauty. The volcanic landscapes, with sugar, palm, banana and pineapple plantations that roll down to sandy beaches of white and black sand are just some of the reasons why Christopher Columbus claimed that Martinique was ‘the most beautiful country in the world’ when he landed here in 1493.

All holiday makers to Fort de France love the captivating mix of French and Creole cultures. Here, in the capital city, Parisian chic meets a laid back Caribbean vibe. You can find fashionable French brands in the stylish boutiques as well as vibrant covered markets where the melodies of French folk music mingle with the sounds of local zouk.

There is as much to do off the island as in Fort de France itself; choose from a range of water activities from snorkelling to kayaking. Architecture fans will appreciate the replica of Paris’ Sacred Heart Basilica whilst art lovers will be thrilled with the Paul Gauguin museum.

 MAR19 - TROPICAL PARADISE & PLANTATION HOUSE (approx. 4.5 hours) - 2013/2014
Level of difficulty: moderate  Drink

On leaving your ship, this coach-based tour to some of the best sights in Martinique begins by heading east of the port, passing Lamentin – the island’s main economic hub and home to the Le Lamentin international airport – en route to your first destination: the plantation house. This exceptionally well-preserved former plantation residence once even hosted informal talks between the former French and US American presidents, François Mitterrand and George H. W. Bush, respectively, in 1991. Apart from beautiful interior decorations and wonderful antique furniture, the house also features splendid grounds, including the requisite sugarcane and an old rum distillery, now disused. Your visit will also include a chance to sample some rum, taste some freshly cut sugarcane and drink the juice. On your return journey, a short photo stop will be made at a point that affords amazing views of Lamentin Bay, Le Lamentin airport, the port and your ship. A further stop will be made at a banana plantation before you arrive at Balata Church, an exquisite miniature replica of the Sacred Heart Basilica of Montmartre in Paris, where you can enjoy more beguiling views of Fort-de-France and the bay below. Your final destination is a lovingly crafted botanical garden, full of magnificent plants and flowers, before you return to the port and your ship.
