Fort de France, on the island of Martinique makes for a fantastic day off the ship and has something for all tastes.
Located in the East Caribbean, Martinique is a Mecca for tourists who are drawn by its stunning natural beauty. The volcanic landscapes, with sugar, palm, banana and pineapple plantations that roll down to sandy beaches of white and black sand are just some of the reasons why Christopher Columbus claimed that Martinique was ‘the most beautiful country in the world’ when he landed here in 1493.
All holiday makers to Fort de France love the captivating mix of French and Creole cultures. Here, in the capital city, Parisian chic meets a laid back Caribbean vibe. You can find fashionable French brands in the stylish boutiques as well as vibrant covered markets where the melodies of French folk music mingle with the sounds of local zouk.
There is as much to do off the island as in Fort de France itself; choose from a range of water activities from snorkelling to kayaking. Architecture fans will appreciate the replica of Paris’ Sacred Heart Basilica whilst art lovers will be thrilled with the Paul Gauguin museum.

The enchanting island of Martinique is home to some of the best beaches in the whole of the Caribbean, which is why this tour is dedicated to giving you nothing but sea, sand and sun. After boarding a boat at the pier, you can enjoy a refreshing non-alcoholic juice-based punch as you cross the bay en route to Anse-Dufour, a picturesque fishing village, and the beautiful beach, a stone’s throw from which the boat will drop its anchor. You can then spend the time as you wish – catching some rays on the golden sands, going for a walk, swimming or perhaps snorkelling, with assistance in selecting the correct equipment provided by the staff. A rum punch cocktail will be served on your return trip across the bay, during which there will be more fabulous views for you to take in.
Please note: this tour is not suitable for guests suffering with asthma or epilepsy. It is at the Captain’s discretion to change the beach or snorkelling location at any time to suit the sea condition and/or to ensure guests’ comfort and safety. This tour is only available for guests on board the MSC Musica.

Step off the ship and get in a jeep for an exciting tour of the lesser known regions of Martinique. A scenic drive along the main roads will first take you to the small town of St. Joseph in the island’s interior, after which you will enter private property and proceed to the off-road part of your tour, fording a number of rivers along the way before you hit the rainforest and its glorious vegetation. A stop will be made to let you appreciate the sheer tranquillity of this special place. Back on the road again, you can enjoy splendid views of the valleys and mountains before learning a little about Martinique’s agriculture when you travel through a banana plantation. Your final stop on the tour is the beautiful Coeur-Bouliki forest near St. Joseph and the Rivière Blanche (White River), where you can take a seat at the river bank and refresh yourself with a delicious drink. Your return to Fort-de-France on interior roads will give you more marvellous views of the bay to enjoy before you arrive back at your ship.

On leaving your ship, this coach-based tour to some of the best sights in Martinique begins by heading east of the port, passing Lamentin – the island’s main economic hub and home to the Le Lamentin international airport – en route to your first destination: the plantation house. This exceptionally well-preserved former plantation residence once even hosted informal talks between the former French and US American presidents, François Mitterrand and George H. W. Bush, respectively, in 1991. Apart from beautiful interior decorations and wonderful antique furniture, the house also features splendid grounds, including the requisite sugarcane and an old rum distillery, now disused. Your visit will also include a chance to sample some rum, taste some freshly cut sugarcane and drink the juice. On your return journey, a short photo stop will be made at a point that affords amazing views of Lamentin Bay, Le Lamentin airport, the port and your ship. A further stop will be made at a banana plantation before you arrive at Balata Church, an exquisite miniature replica of the Sacred Heart Basilica of Montmartre in Paris, where you can enjoy more beguiling views of Fort-de-France and the bay below. Your final destination is a lovingly crafted botanical garden, full of magnificent plants and flowers, before you return to the port and your ship.
Please note: the tour itinerary may be reversed. As this tour involves travelling along winding roads, it may be unsuitable for guests who are susceptible to motion sickness. This tour is only available for guests on board the MSC Musica.
